What is a Subcutaneous Injection?
If you're considering a career in disability support or have recently started working with participants requiring High Intensity Supports, you may have heard the term subcutaneous injection. But what exactly does it mean, and why is it such an important skill for NDIS support workers?
What Does "Subcutaneous" Mean? A subcutaneous injection is a medication that is administered into the layer of fatty tissue just beneath the skin. This layer, known as the subcutaneous tissue, contains fewer blood vessels than muscle, allowing medication to be absorbed gradually into the bloodstream. Subcutaneous injections are commonly used because they are effective, relatively comfortable for the participant, and suitable for medications that need to be absorbed slowly over time. What Medications are Given by Subcutaneous Injection? The medication most people associate with subcutaneous injections is insulin, which is used by many people living with diabetes. However, insulin is not the only medication given this way. Other prescribed medications may also be administered via the subcutaneous route, including some blood-thinning medications, biological therapies, hormone treatments and other participant-specific medications. Regardless of the medication, support workers must always follow the participant's individual Health Support Plan and organisational procedures. Why Do Support Workers Need Training? Supporting a participant who requires medication via subcutaneous injection is recognised by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) as a High Intensity Support Skill. While administering an injection may appear straightforward, the worker is responsible for much more than simply using a pen or syringe. Support workers need to understand:
Is Subcutaneous Injection Training the Same as Insulin Training? Many people search for insulin training, but the two terms are closely related. Insulin is one of the most common medications administered by subcutaneous injection, which is why many practical training courses use insulin administration as the primary learning scenario. Once support workers understand the principles of safe subcutaneous injections, those same skills can be applied to other prescribed medications administered using the same route, provided they have appropriate participant-specific training. Why is Site Rotation Important? One of the key concepts taught during subcutaneous injection training is site rotation. Repeatedly administering medication into the same location can cause thickened or damaged fatty tissue, known as lipohypertrophy. This can affect how medication is absorbed and may reduce its effectiveness. Rotating injection sites helps maintain healthy tissue, improves medication absorption and supports participant comfort.
